Health Is the Highest-Leverage Investment You Can Make

People often ask what the foundation of productivity, good decision-making, and long-term success is.

It is not a new framework. It is not AI. It is not working longer hours.

It is health.

Everything else compounds on top of it. Clear thinking, emotional resilience, energy, creativity, discipline, and even relationships become easier when your body is functioning well. Ignore your health, and eventually everything else becomes harder.

I have found it useful to think of health as something that needs to be actively accounted for every day. For me, it comes down to three pillars: sleep, nutrition, and sport.

1. Sleep: The Ultimate Performance Enhancer

Sleep is non-negotiable.

My goal is simple: 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM, every day. Eight hours.

A consistent sleep schedule matters more than squeezing in another hour of work. Deep sleep is where recovery happens, memories consolidate, muscles repair, and the brain resets.

The next day’s focus is not created by another cup of coffee. It is created the night before.

2. Nutrition: Fuel, Not Entertainment

Food should support the life you want to live.

I keep a few straightforward rules:

  • stay below my daily MyFitnessPal limit of 2,300 calories
  • take Vitamin D and K2 consistently
  • eat plenty of greens
  • keep alcohol to a minimum

None of these are extreme. They are simply habits that are easy to sustain over years.

Nutrition is not about perfection. It is about giving your body the resources it needs while avoiding the slow accumulation of unhealthy habits.

3. Sport: Building a Complete Athlete

Exercise is more than burning calories. Different activities develop different qualities, and together they create a balanced body.

Shape

These activities build endurance, mobility, and overall health.

  • yoga
  • long-distance running at an easy pace

Speed

These improve explosiveness, cardiovascular capacity, and efficiency.

  • cycling
  • track running

Strength

Strength training protects against injury and makes everyday life easier.

  • full-body weight training
  • rowing

Each discipline reinforces the others. Running becomes easier with stronger legs. Cycling benefits from better endurance. Yoga improves mobility and recovery for lifting. It is an ecosystem rather than a set of isolated workouts.

Sport Forms Character

The Germans have a saying:

“Sport formt Charakter.”

Sport shapes character.

There is a lot of truth in that.

Sport teaches consistency over motivation. It teaches delayed gratification, humility, resilience, and discipline. It teaches you to show up on days when you do not feel like it. It teaches you to lose gracefully and improve patiently.

Those lessons do not stay in the gym or on the track. They carry into work, family, and every meaningful challenge.

The discipline required to finish a long run is the same discipline required to finish difficult projects. The resilience built during hard workouts becomes resilience during stressful weeks at work.

The Foundation of Focused Work

People often search for productivity hacks, but the biggest lever is much simpler.

Sleep well.

Eat well.

Move every day.

A healthy body enables a focused mind. A focused mind produces better work. Better work creates better opportunities.

Everything starts with health.

That is why I consider it the most important investment I make, not because it guarantees success, but because it gives me the best chance to succeed in every other area of life.
