I recently started going deeper on drones after earning my FAA Part 107 certificate and spending more time with a lightweight DJI Neo 2. What began as curiosity about cool aerial footage quickly turned into more practical questions: where can I actually fly, how high should I go, and how do I avoid being intrusive around homes and trails?

The learning curve has been steeper than I expected — not technically, but ethically and legally. Here’s what I’ve been figuring out.


The Gap Between Allowed and Considerate

One of the first things I wanted to understand was the gap between what is technically allowed and what is considerate. In earlier research, I focused on whether flying over private property is allowed in Washington, and the more useful takeaway was that even if airspace rules may permit a flight, altitude, distance, and behavior matter a lot if you want to avoid bothering people.

The FAA has rules about airspace — the 400-foot ceiling, the requirement to stay away from airports and restricted areas, the prohibition on flying directly over people without authorization. But the FAA doesn’t have rules about being a good neighbor. That’s on you.

I’ve found myself asking questions that aren’t in the regulation handbook: Is this height intrusive? Will this flight bother someone trying to enjoy their backyard? Is this trail too crowded for a drone to be appropriate? The answers aren’t always clear, but asking them is better than not asking at all.


Altitude: The Practical Reality

I kept coming back to simple operating questions like whether 200 to 300 feet is a reasonable working height and what the hard 400-foot ceiling means in practice.

The FAA’s 400-foot limit is straightforward on paper, but in the field it’s more nuanced. 200 feet is often enough for decent aerial shots without feeling invasive. 300 feet gives you more dramatic perspective but starts to feel more present. 400 feet is the ceiling — the absolute maximum unless you have specific authorization.

For reference: 200 feet is about 60 meters, 300 feet is about 90 meters, and 400 feet is about 120 meters. I’ve found that staying in the 200-300 foot range works well for most situations — high enough for interesting footage, low enough to feel respectful of the ground below.


Sub-250g: What Changes and What Doesn’t

Because I’m using a sub-250g drone, I also looked at what that changes and what it does not. A small drone like the Neo 2 can make casual local flying easier, but it does not remove the need to check airspace, launch location rules, and nearby restrictions around places like Issaquah Highlands.

The FAA treats sub-250g drones differently in some ways — you don’t need to register them if you’re flying recreationally, and some of the operating restrictions are relaxed. But the airspace rules still apply. The 400-foot ceiling still applies. Airport restrictions still apply. Privacy considerations still apply.

The weight advantage is real — a smaller drone is less intimidating to people on the ground, it’s quieter, and if something goes wrong, the damage is limited. But smaller doesn’t mean consequence-free. The responsibility is the same.


Tiger Mountain: The Boundary Question

That led naturally to another local question: Tiger Mountain. I wanted to know whether starting outside a restricted area and flying inward somehow makes a flight legal, and the answer is that boundaries, land management rules, and wilderness restrictions still matter enough that this shortcut is not something to rely on.

The logic is tempting: if I launch from outside the park boundary, can I fly over it? The answer is complicated and depends on the specific land designation, the airspace classification, and the local rules. Wilderness areas have additional restrictions. State parks have their own rules. The Department of Natural Resources has its own policies.

The short version: don’t try to game the boundaries. If an area is restricted for drone use, respect that restriction. Find somewhere else to fly. The PNW has plenty of legal launch spots — there’s no need to push the edge.


What’s Actually Fun to Do With a Drone

Not all of my drone questions were about regulation. I also spent time thinking about what is actually fun or creatively worthwhile to do with a drone, and the most compelling ideas were cinematic landscape shots, self-tracking footage for biking or running, and eventually more advanced FPV setups.

Cinematic landscape shots. This is what most people imagine when they think of drone photography — sweeping aerial views of mountains, forests, coastlines. The PNW is absurdly good for this. The challenge is finding compositions that aren’t just “look, I’m high up.” The best shots tell a story about the landscape, not just the altitude.

Self-tracking footage. This is where it gets interesting for me as a runner and cyclist. The idea of having a drone follow you on a trail or ride, capturing the experience from above, is compelling. It requires more planning and more sophisticated gear, but the footage can be incredible.

FPV (First Person View). This is the rabbit hole I’m currently staring down. FPV flying is different — you’re wearing goggles that show you what the drone sees in real-time, and the experience is closer to flying than to photography. It’s more technical, more demanding, and potentially more rewarding. It’s also where the gear questions get serious.


The Gear Rabbit Hole: Goggles, Air Units, and Compatibility

That’s what pushed me into the gear rabbit hole around DJI Goggles V3, O4 air units, controller compatibility, and where to buy parts when the obvious retailers are out of stock.

The DJI ecosystem is powerful but complex. The Goggles V3 are the current standard for FPV, but they require compatible air units and controllers. The O4 transmission system is the latest technology, but not all drones support it. Finding the right combination of gear that works together is a puzzle in itself.

And then there’s the availability problem. The popular gear is often out of stock at the major retailers, which means diving into specialty shops, used markets, and waiting lists. It’s not as simple as clicking buy on Amazon — though that would be nice.


The Bigger Lesson

The bigger lesson from all of this is that drone flying gets more interesting when it stops being only about the gadget. The real challenge is combining legal awareness, good judgment, local terrain knowledge, and a clear idea of what kind of footage or experience you actually want.

For me, that means treating the drone less like a toy and more like a compact flying camera system that needs the same planning as any other serious outdoor tool. You don’t just show up and start flying. You check the airspace. You scout the location. You think about the people and wildlife below. You have a plan for what you’re trying to capture.

The Part 107 certificate was the easy part — a test, some study time, a piece of paper. The real learning is happening now, on the ground, figuring out how to be the kind of pilot who gets invited back.


What’s Next

I’m still early in this journey. The Neo 2 is a great starter drone, but I can feel the pull toward more capable gear and more advanced flying. The FPV setup is calling my name. The idea of cinematic self-tracking footage on my mountain runs is hard to resist.

But the fundamentals don’t change. Fly safe. Fly legal. Fly considerate. The best drone pilots are the ones you never notice — they capture the shot without disturbing the peace.

That’s the goal. One flight at a time.
