He points out that no human has ever experienced the core of a star, yet we know what happens there. Experience is essential for testing ideas, but it is not the source of ideas.
Instead, knowledge is created through a process of conjecture and criticism. We constantly guess explanations for how the world works. These guesses are then subjected to rigorous criticism, including experimentation and observation. If a theory fails the test, it is replaced or modified. This process, associated with the philosopher Karl Popper, treats knowledge as evolutionary. Just as biological organisms evolve through variation and selection, ideas evolve through conjecture and refutation.

We should never seek justification or absolute certainty for our ideas, as that leads to dogmatism. Instead, we should focus on error correction. What Makes a Good Explanation?
Deutsch introduces a vital criterion for distinguishing valuable knowledge from noise: a good explanation must be hard to vary. A bad explanation is one that can be easily altered to fit any observation. For example, saying that a mythical spirit caused an event is a bad explanation because you can always change the story of the spirit to match whatever happens. It has no predictive power and no substance.
Conversely, a good explanation accounts for phenomena using details that are all essential. If you remove or alter any part of the explanation, the whole thing falls apart. Newton’s laws of motion are a prime example. They explain the fall of an apple and the orbit of planets with the same specific set of rules. You cannot tweak the equations without ruining their predictive accuracy. This rigor is what gives explanatory knowledge its immense “reach”-the ability to apply to situations beyond the original context in which it was discovered.
Humans as Universal Constructors
One of the most profound claims in the book is that humans are universal explainers. Unlike other animals, whose evolution has specialized them for specific environments, humans have the ability to understand any phenomenon. There is no analogy to us in the animal kingdom. A chimp will never understand trigonometry, but there is no conceptual barrier preventing humans from understanding the fundamental structure of reality.
This capability stems from two factors. First, we possess computational universality, meaning our minds can simulate any physical process. Second, we have the unique capacity to create new explanations. This combination allows us to become universal constructors. Given the right explanatory knowledge, we can transform matter to solve almost any problem, from transmuting elements to reversing aging.
The Multiverse and Reality
Deutsch applies these epistemological principles to physics, specifically quantum theory. He argues that the most accurate explanation for quantum phenomena, such as the interference patterns seen in experiments, is the existence of a multiverse. In this view, reality consists of a massively large structure of multiple universes, where every physically possible event happens.
While we perceive only a single “slice” of this reality, our perspective is limited. The multiverse is not just a mathematical abstraction but a physical reality where different histories branch out and can affect one another. This worldview reinforces the idea of fungibility and the vastness of what is possible, suggesting that great fiction might be close to fact somewhere in the multiverse structure.
Dynamic vs. Static Societies
The creation of knowledge is not just an individual pursuit but a collective one. Deutsch distinguishes between static and dynamic societies. Static societies rely on tradition and authority, actively suppressing new ideas that could destabilize the status quo. These societies might change, but so slowly that it is imperceptible within a human lifetime.
Dynamic societies, or open societies, embrace change. They value creativity and allow for the free and open debate of ideas. This environment is the only one in which the error correction necessary for rapid knowledge creation can occur. By exposing ideas to criticism, bad explanations are weeded out, allowing good explanations to rise. The Enlightenment was a pivotal moment in human history because it established the conditions for this shift, enabling the unbounded progress we enjoy today.
The Jump to Universality
Progress often happens incrementally, but occasionally it takes a massive leap. Deutsch describes this as the “jump to universality.” This occurred in the evolution of the genetic code, which evolved from non-universal origins into a system capable of coding for any biological organism. It happened again with writing systems, which eventually became able to represent any spoken language.
Once a system becomes universal, its potential becomes infinite. The same principle applies to human knowledge. Once we discovered how to create explanatory knowledge purposefully, we unlocked a future without inherent limits.
