I want to become a pilot in 2027.
Right now, I only have the FAA drone certificate, which is a real start but obviously not the same thing as flying an airplane. The good news is that it is not starting from zero. I already have some weather, airspace, planning, and safety context.
The more honest version of this goal is that I do not only want a private pilot certificate for its own sake.
I want to position myself for a world where personal powered-lift / eVTOL aircraft become genuinely usable.
As of August 9, 2026, the FAA picture is much more real than it was a few years ago:
- the FAA published the final powered-lift integration rule in November 2024
- the FAA now has powered-lift pilot training guidance
- MOSAIC is live in pieces, with pilot-related changes effective October 22, 2025 and light-sport category aircraft certification changes effective July 24, 2026
That said, the ecosystem is still early. Specific aircraft still have to get certificated, training pipelines still have to mature, and infrastructure still has to exist in the places I would actually want to live and fly.
So this roadmap still assumes my first major milestone is a Private Pilot Certificate, Airplane Single-Engine Land. Not because I have abandoned the VTOL idea, but because it is still the best real first move.
What the FAA Path Actually Looks Like
The rough FAA sequence is:
- Student pilot certificate
- Medical certificate
- Ground study
- Flight training
- Knowledge test
- Solo
- Cross-country and checkride prep
- Practical test
For a private pilot certificate, the FAA minimum is 40 flight hours, but the FAA also notes that most people actually take closer to 60 to 75 hours. I should plan for the real number, not the legal minimum.
I also need at least a third-class medical certificate before my first solo flight, and the private pilot airplane knowledge test is the PAR exam: 60 questions, 2.0 hours, and a 70% passing score.
Why This Still Matters Even If My Real Goal Is VTOL
If personal powered-lift aircraft actually become practical, I do not want to be the person starting from zero at that moment.
I want to already have:
- aeronautical judgment
- weather discipline
- airspace fluency
- radio comfort
- actual cockpit habits
- some understanding of aircraft systems and limitations
The FAA’s current powered-lift guidance is aimed at adding a powered-lift category rating and specific type rating to an existing pilot certificate, not creating a magical shortcut for non-pilots. That is a huge reason the private pilot path still feels right. Source: AC 194-2.
In other words: even if the aircraft eventually looks futuristic, the skill stack still looks like aviation.
What MOSAIC Actually Changed
MOSAIC is important, but it does not mean I can casually buy any eVTOL and fly it next weekend.
The useful summary is:
- the final MOSAIC rule was published on July 24, 2025
- sport-pilot and related rule changes became effective on October 22, 2025
- light-sport category aircraft certification changes became effective on July 24, 2026
- the FAA explicitly opened the door to new types of LSA, including powered-lift and electric motors
That is a real shift. It expands what can eventually qualify inside the lighter end of the certification system. Sources: FAA MOSAIC page, FAA sport pilot page, FAA light-sport category aircraft page.
But MOSAIC does not remove the need for:
- aircraft certification
- pilot training
- operating rules
- local infrastructure
- safe landing and takeoff sites
That last point matters a lot. VTOL means “no runway required.” It does not mean “operate anywhere you feel like.”
What Powered-Lift Changes
The powered-lift framework is where this starts to feel less theoretical.
Under the FAA’s current rules, powered-lift operating in vertical-lift mode can use helicopter-like minimum altitude treatment under 14 CFR 91.119(d) through 14 CFR Part 194. That means the runway question really does change.
But the replacement questions are:
- where can I legally and safely take off and land?
- what routes or altitudes has the FAA prescribed?
- how hard is the surrounding airspace?
- how accepted is this locally from a zoning, noise, and infrastructure perspective?
This is why I think personal VTOL will feel more like helicopter-style aviation plus new infrastructure than like “a flying car that ignores the rest of aviation.”
What the AIR ONE Example Tells Me
The AIR ONE official page is a good reality check because it is one of the more interesting personal eVTOL concepts for individual ownership.
As of August 9, 2026, AIR’s own site says:
- pilot requirement: Private Pilot License
- certification path: FAA Light Sport Aircraft (LSA) - MOSAIC
That is extremely revealing.
Even one of the more consumer-facing personal eVTOL companies is not currently saying, “sport pilot only, no big deal.” It is still pointing at a real pilot baseline.
That is one of the strongest reasons I do not want to overfit my 2027 plan to hypothetical shortcuts.
Why Washington Changes the Plan
If I lived somewhere dry and predictable, I could try to speed-run the whole thing in one season. Western Washington is not that place.
That means the smarter plan is:
- Use fall and winter for theory, reading, systems, weather, charts, and FAA paperwork
- Use spring to begin or ramp up actual training
- Use summer for the heaviest flight block
- Use early fall as checkride buffer in case weather, maintenance, or scheduling gets in the way
That is not slower. It is just more realistic.
It is also worth separating two questions:
- Where should I get my private pilot certificate?
- Where would a future personal VTOL lifestyle actually be easiest?
Those answers may not be the same.
Phase 1: Late 2026, Make Aviation Real
Before I buy a pile of books and equipment, I want to make the goal feel concrete.
Things I Should Do First

Winter is the right time for the academic side.
This is when I want to build understanding in:
- Airspace
- Regulations
- Weather theory and weather products
- Aircraft systems
- Aerodynamics
- Flight instruments
- Weight and balance
- Performance
- Sectional charts
- Navigation
- Airport operations
- Risk management and aeronautical decision-making
This is also where the gap between drone knowledge and airplane knowledge becomes obvious.

What I Should Study: Books, PDFs, and Question Guides
I do not need a giant aviation library. I need a small set of current sources and a repeatable way to turn them into knowledge.
The useful distinction is:
- Learn the theory: a readable textbook or ground-school course
- Verify it: the current FAA handbook, ACS, regulation, or AIM section
- Test it: practice questions with explanations, not answer memorization
The FAA publishes representative PAR sample questions, not the exact live question bank. A good practice bank should therefore teach the concept, explain every answer, and point back to an FAA source.

The two sources I should treat as live rather than frozen books are the current Aeronautical Information Manual and the current 14 CFR regulations. A dated book or PDF can be excellent for study, but current rules and procedures win whenever they disagree.
What I Would Actually Buy
Most of the official library is free, so I should buy books only where they make studying easier.
- Best single readable textbook: The Complete Private Pilot, 14th edition. It turns the FAA material into a coherent course and ends chapters with review questions.
- Best question-and-answer book for the checkride: Private Pilot Oral Exam Guide, 15th edition. It is mapped to the ACS and is more useful once I have basic theory knowledge.
- Best targeted radio book: Say Again, Please, 7th edition. This is optional, but worthwhile if radio calls are one of the intimidating parts.
- Optional paper reference: 2027 FAR/AIM. A physical copy is easy to tab, but I still need the current eCFR and FAA AIM updates.
- The POH/AFM for my exact training airplane: only after I know the school, aircraft model, and ideally the model year. A random Cessna 172 manual is not automatically the manual for the airplane I will fly.
My lean shopping list is therefore one readable textbook plus the oral exam guide. I can add the radio book if I need it. I do not need to buy paper copies of every free FAA handbook.
For written-test prep, I should choose one current course or question system, ideally the one my instructor recommends. ASA Prepware, Gleim, Sporty’s, King Schools, and Pilot Institute all occupy this category. Buying several overlapping banks would mostly create duplicate work. I also need to confirm that the course or my instructor will provide the required knowledge-test endorsement before I schedule the PAR.
Free Question-Based Ways to Start
Yes, there are good question-driven resources I can use before paying for a full course:
- FAA PAR sample questions: official questions with ACS codes; use the testing supplement beside them.
- Sporty’s free Private Pilot Study Buddy: topic practice and timed practice tests with a much larger question set.
- MIT OpenCourseWare Private Pilot Ground School: free lectures, notes, and an organized conceptual introduction. It is from 2019, so I should learn concepts from it but verify regulations, procedures, and test details against current FAA sources.
- AOPA pre-solo courses and quizzes: short scenario-oriented material on airport markings, preflight responsibilities, airspace, weather, and early solo knowledge.
- The Private Pilot ACS itself: every line ending in a
.Kcode is a theory prompt I should be able to explain, not just recognize in a multiple-choice list.
Free questions are enough to begin and diagnose weak areas. They do not automatically provide the instructor endorsement required to take the FAA knowledge test.
My Seven-Day Theory Jump-Start
I can start now without pretending that one week is a complete ground school. For every question below, I should first answer from memory, then verify it in the linked FAA material, and finally explain it aloud in plain language.

The Study Loop I Want to Keep Using
For each topic:

- Verify the explanation in an FAA source.
- Record the ACS code and make one short correction note for every miss.
- Repeat missed concepts after
1,3, and7days. - Add a scenario: “What would this mean for an actual flight from my local airport?”
After the seven-day start, I should work topic by topic through a readable textbook or ground school, use the PHAK and weather handbook for depth, read the Airplane Flying Handbook alongside flight lessons, and let the ACS drive final review. Before scheduling the written, I want repeated practice-test scores around 85-90% with no major weak category, even though the FAA passing score is 70%.
Optional Mechanical Deep Dives
If I still want more aircraft knowledge after the private-pilot foundation is underway, the FAA also hosts the Aviation Maintenance Technician Handbook—General (PDF), Airframe (PDF), and Powerplant (PDF).
I do not need to become a mechanic or read those enormous books in sequence. The better use is to look up a system after I encounter it in the POH, on a preflight, or during a lesson. That gets me beyond “engine goes brrr” without turning private-pilot study into an A&P curriculum.
Phase 3: Administrative Setup Before Solo Matters
There are two pieces of FAA admin I should not leave until the last minute.
1. Student Pilot Certificate
I should create an IACRA account and start the student pilot certificate process early. The student certificate is now separate from the medical and does not expire.
2. Third-Class Medical
I should create a MedXPress account and schedule an appointment with an AME early enough that I am not blocked when I am ready to solo.
If there is any reason at all to suspect a medical complication, I would rather learn that early than after spending a lot of money on flight training.
Phase 4: Spring 2027, Start Flying for Real
Once the weather gets better, the goal should shift from “aviation interest” to “consistent training.”
The most important thing here is frequency.
Flying once every two or three weeks is a great way to spend money relearning the same things. If possible, I want something closer to:

- Start cross-country dual flights
- Build comfort with radios, towered airports, and navigation
By this point I want the ground school material to be mostly behind me so I can focus on executing instead of constantly feeling academically underwater.
A strong target would be:
- By June 2027: first solo and written test passed
Phase 6: Summer to Early Fall 2027, Cross-Country and Checkride Prep
This is where the training starts to feel like actual flying rather than only lesson blocks near the airport.
This Phase Likely Includes
- Dual cross-country flights
- Night training
- Instrument reference time
- Solo cross-country requirements
- Towered-airport solo work
- Checkride prep flights
- Oral exam prep using the ACS
This is also where western Washington summer becomes a real advantage. I want to use the best weather window for the biggest training chunk.
A More Honest Long-Term Goal Stack
If I am being honest with myself, the long-term stack I care about probably looks more like this:
- Get private pilot airplane in
2027 - Keep flying enough to become genuinely comfortable, not just legal
- Decide whether instrument rating is worth it for the climate and kind of flying I want
- Track the powered-lift market and certification picture from
2027-2029 - Be ready to add a powered-lift rating / type rating when a real aircraft and training pipeline exist
That is much less cinematic than “flying car by next summer,” but it is also much more likely to work.

Where This Might Be Easier Than Western Washington
If I optimize for a future that includes personal aircraft and maybe someday personal VTOL, western Washington is probably not the easiest place to do it.
The main Washington drawbacks are:
- marine weather and lower ceilings
- dense Seattle-area airspace on the west side
- terrain and pass weather
- still-early vertiport planning rather than a mature ecosystem
WSDOT is clearly thinking about this world. It has already published a Vertiports Land Use Compatibility Supplement and an Advanced Air Mobility Aircraft Plan. That is encouraging, but it also means Washington is still in the planning stage.
If I wanted to bias toward sunshine, aviation access, and less density while still keeping great nature nearby, these states look especially worth watching:
1. Idaho
This might be the strongest overall alternative.
Why:
- Idaho’s Aeronautics Division maintains 30+ backcountry airstrips
- the state openly leans into recreational and backcountry flying
- places like Boise give much drier weather than western Washington
- mountains, rivers, skiing, and wilderness are all still right there

My read: Idaho is probably the best blend of real nature + real flying culture + drier conditions.
2. Utah
Utah is a very strong candidate if I want sunshine and aviation energy.
Why:
- UDOT’s Division of Aeronautics supports a statewide aviation system and highlights 46 public use airports
- the state actively promotes recreational flying through its Fly Utah Passport Program
- Utah has excellent desert and mountain access depending on where I live
- the climate is much more training-friendly than western Washington

My read: Utah may be the best if I want sunshine plus dramatic nature plus an aviation-positive state culture.
3. Arizona
Arizona is maybe the easiest pure training environment on this list.
Why:
- a huge amount of VFR-friendly weather
- a large statewide airport network; ADOT points to 67 publicly owned and operated airports
- lots of aviation activity and training culture
The downside for me is that the nature is excellent but different. It is more desert and canyon country than lush mountain wilderness, and the summer heat can be brutal.

4. Montana
Montana is compelling if I optimize for space, scenery, and general aviation identity.
Why:
- MDT maintains a statewide aviation system, airport directory, inspections, and active pilot services
- the state feels culturally aviation-friendly
- the nature is world-class
But I would not confuse Montana with easy year-round flying. Winter is real, distances are long, and it is less of a “sunshine cheat code” than Idaho, Utah, or Arizona.

My read: Montana is a beautiful long-term aviation state, but not the clearest answer if the goal is simply to make training and regular flying easier.
My Current Location Take
If I stay in Washington for now, the practical move is still:
- train locally
- finish the private certificate
- keep watching powered-lift certification
- think harder about geography only after I know that I truly love real flying, not just the idea of flying
If I eventually optimize for the lifestyle I am imagining, I suspect the ranking looks something like:
- Idaho
- Utah
- eastern Washington / Cle Elum or Yakima side
- Arizona
- Montana
That ranking is not about prestige. It is about where future small-aircraft or personal-VTOL life seems most likely to feel natural rather than constantly compromised.
Adult-Beginner Follow-Ups I Want to Keep Open
One thing I have realized is that I do not only need FAA references. I also need a few good “what does this actually look like as a grown adult beginner?” resources.
- FAA: Become a Pilot: the official starting point for certificate types, medical requirements, testing, and the basic path.
- EAA: Learn to Fly: probably the best beginner-friendly overview I have found in one place.
- EAA: Becoming a Private Pilot - Step by Step: a clean walkthrough of what private pilot training actually involves.
- EAA Eagle Flights: especially interesting because it is built specifically for adults who want a no-pressure introductory flight plus some mentorship.
- EAA Learn to Fly Week: recorded beginner webinars on topics like medicals, choosing a school, using simulators well, saving time and money, and checkride prep.
- Magenta Debrief: Flying in midlife: not U.S.-specific FAA guidance, but one of the better pieces I have seen on the time, energy, money, and family realities of learning later.
If I keep reading in this area, I suspect the highest-leverage shift will be moving from “future powered-lift curiosity” back toward “adult beginner pilot craft” and simply getting closer to the real training rhythm.

How I Want to Learn Aircraft Better
I do not only want to pass the written. I want to actually understand the machine.
A good practical mix would be:
- Read the aircraft systems chapters in the PHAK
- Read enough of the AMT handbooks to understand airframe, engine, and basic maintenance concepts
- Ask my instructor to walk me through the POH and systems in detail
- Spend time around preflights, oil checks, fuel sampling, tie-downs, and postflight habits
- If possible, sit in on a maintenance conversation or annual inspection discussion just to see how owners think about airplane care
I do not need an A&P license. I just want more mechanical intuition.
Final Take
The path from drone pilot to airplane pilot is not small, but it is also not mysterious. And the path from “I like the idea of personal eVTOL” to “I am actually positioned to use one” is even longer.
For me, the smartest version of this plan is:
- use winter for theory
- use a couple of early flights to confirm I love it
- handle the medical and student certificate early
- train consistently in spring and summer
- aim for the private pilot checkride in late
2027 - treat that as the first real foundation for whatever powered-lift world becomes viable after that
The key is not trying to do everything immediately. The key is turning “I want to become a pilot” into a seasonal plan with specific milestones while keeping the bigger dream in sight.
That makes it feel less like a dream and more like a project.
