Twelve of us are heading to Leavenworth for Oktoberfest weekend, with an Airbnb, a hot tub, card games, and people connected to Norway, Hawai‘i, Germany, the mainland United States, Korea, Japan, China, and India. That is already enough for a very good weekend.

Friday: Drive, Settle In, and Oktoberfest
Arrival: divide and conquer
Once the Airbnb is available:
- Two people do the Safeway run for breakfast, dinner basics, snacks, kid food, and nonalcoholic drinks.
- Everyone else unloads, chooses rooms, and gets the game and hot-tub areas ready.
- We eat lightly before the festival or plan on brats, pretzels, kraut, and sandwiches inside.
Specialty ingredients for Saturday’s international dinner should come from home. Safeway is useful for fresh food and forgotten basics, but it is not the moment to begin a search for seven cuisines’ worth of specialty groceries.
5 p.m.: head toward Oktoberfest
The official Leavenworth Oktoberfest runs from 6 p.m. to midnight on Friday. The free local festival shuttle starts at 5 p.m., runs roughly every 30 minutes, and continues until 12:15 a.m. Its route includes parts of Icicle Road, Ski Hill Drive, and other lodging areas, so we should check whether it passes close to the Airbnb. Otherwise, we need a sober-driver, walking, or taxi plan.
Useful Friday moments from the current schedule:
- 6 p.m.: gates open and AlpenFolk begins at the Gazebo
- 7:15 and 7:20 p.m.: women’s and men’s stein-holding contests in the Festhalle
- 7:45 p.m.: European Take-Out in the Festhalle
- 8:15 p.m.: S-Bahn in the Bierzelt
- 9:10 p.m.: pretzel toss in the Festhalle
- 9:30 p.m.: West Coast Prost in the Festhalle
The toddler can join us. Kids are welcome in the Festhalle and Kinderplatz until 9 p.m.; Kinderplatz has games, face painting, a root-beer garden, and a Ferris wheel. The Front Street Park stage is 21+, and all minors must leave the ticketed venues at 9 p.m. We should decide in advance which adult will head back with the kiddo rather than improvising at 8:55.
One ticket detail is worth checking now: the festival sells separate Friday admission, Saturday admission, and a weekend pass. “Tickets for October 9–10” only means both days if we actually bought the weekend pass.
Saturday: Pick a Morning, Then Stay Flexible
We should choose Saturday’s morning plan on Friday night using the actual weather, trail conditions, and everybody’s energy. Twelve people do not have to make the same choice.
Option A: dry-weather group hike
Icicle Gorge is the best match for the group. It is an easy, mostly level 3.5-mile loop that usually takes about two hours. The trailhead is roughly 25 minutes from town, the final section of road is gravel, and parking requires a Northwest Forest Pass or payment at the trailhead. The first half of October is also often prime larch season around Leavenworth.
A realistic schedule is:
- 8 a.m.: leave the Airbnb
- 8:30–10:30 a.m.: hike the Icicle Gorge Trail
- Around 11:15 a.m.: return to Leavenworth
This leaves enough time to catch the Saturday festival opening or split for lunch.
Option B: low-lift and little-kid morning
The easiest combination is the two-mile Waterfront Park and Blackbird Island loop, followed by the playground at Enchantment Park. It begins downtown, needs no special equipment, and lets anyone turn around early.
Another good choice is the Leavenworth National Fish Hatchery. Its grounds are open every day of the year, entry is free, and the property has more than five miles of public trails. The one-mile Icicle River Nature Trail is wide, level, and suitable for a stroller or wheelchair.
Option C: coaster and museums
The Leavenworth Adventure Park is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday through Monday during its fall schedule. The alpine coaster operates rain or shine unless weather becomes severe. Time slots can fill on weekends, so this is a reserve-ahead activity.
Children may ride with a driver aged 16 or older if they are at least 3 years old and 38 inches tall. Solo riders must be at least 54 inches tall. Everyone under 18 needs a parent or legal guardian to sign the waiver.
The Leavenworth Nutcracker Museum is a compact, inexpensive rainy-day option in the center of town. It is open daily from 11 a.m.; the museum recommends arriving at least 30 minutes before closing. The scavenger-hunt-style nutcracker search is particularly good for a child.
The Greater Leavenworth Museum is in the same building, upstairs, and is currently open daily from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. It covers the area’s Indigenous, railroad, timber, agricultural, and Bavarian-remaking history.
Option D: Reindeer Farm and horseback riding
These work well as parallel Saturday morning activities, but both need advance reservations.
- Reindeer group: The Leavenworth Reindeer Farm is about a mile from downtown. Tours last roughly one hour, welcome all ages, and require reservations. Children under 55 inches visit the calmer Cupid’s Corner area with a ticketed adult. This is the best animal activity for the toddler; we should try to book a morning slot immediately because the farm recommends reserving two to three months ahead.
- Horseback group: Wild at Heart Horse Rides offers beginner-friendly trail rides by reservation. Public rides are capped at five people, the beginner ride has a minimum age of six, and the two-hour meadow ride has a minimum age of eight. This should be a small subgroup with the earliest available booking rather than an all-twelve-person activity.
Since the toddler is too young for horseback riding, the family group can visit the Reindeer Farm while interested adults or older kids ride horses. Everyone can meet downtown afterward for Oktoberfest rather than trying to fit both animal activities into one morning.

Saturday Oktoberfest highlights
Anyone with Saturday admission or a weekend pass can rejoin Oktoberfest. The parade moves through town at 11:45 a.m., the gates open at noon, and the ceremonial keg tapping is at 2 p.m. in Front Street Park. The Alphorns play at 1:30 p.m., the costume contest begins at 5:45 p.m., and the evening bands continue until closing.
There is no need for all twelve of us to spend twelve more hours at the festival. A good compromise is the parade and early afternoon together, followed by the Airbnb dinner. The enthusiastic subgroup can return afterward; nobody may enter or re-enter after 10 p.m., and minors still need to leave by 9 p.m.
The International Airbnb Dinner
Our group is the most interesting dinner option in town. Instead of asking everybody to cook a full meal, we can make an eight-place tasting table. Each pair or small team makes one snack-size dish connected to a place represented in the group.

- Make only tasting portions, not twelve servings of seven complete meals.
- Assign at least three no-cook or make-ahead dishes.
- Give each hot dish an oven or stovetop window.
- Label meat, dairy, nuts, gluten, and spice level.
- Keep one simple kid plate with rice or noodles, fruit, and something familiar.
- Assign cleanup before dinner begins.
If cooking starts to feel like work, we can turn it into an international snack board and spend the saved time in the hot tub.
Other Activities Worth Considering
Pickleball at the school
This one is easy. The Leavenworth Pickleball Club lists six pickleball-lined tennis courts with adjustable nets at the Cascade School District courts, 330 Evans Street. They are first come, first served, and outdoor play continues through October when weather allows. We should bring paddles and balls rather than count on finding loaners.
Cards, hot tub, and a tiny tournament
The Airbnb is an activity, not merely where we sleep. We can bring a mix of quick games and one longer game, then run a loose team tournament across the weekend. Good twelve-person formats include Codenames, Telestrations, Just One, Wavelength, or rotating tables of smaller card games. A ridiculous prize from a Front Street gift shop would make an excellent trophy.
A town scavenger hunt
For an almost-free activity, split into international teams and give everyone 45 minutes to find the best hat, strangest nutcracker, most convincing Bavarian sign, funniest group pose, and best nonalcoholic drink or sweet. It works in light rain, includes the kiddo, and does not require all twelve people to move as one unit.
What We Should Skip This Time
Floating the river
Even if the afternoon is sunny, October is not the right weekend to make a casual group float the default plan. The city’s free 2026 river shuttle ends on September 7, the water will be cold, and the weather can change quickly. A Waterfront Park walk followed by the Airbnb hot tub gives us the river without the cold-water logistics.
Colchuck Lake as the group hike
Colchuck is beautiful, but it is not a two-to-five-mile town hike. It is roughly nine miles round trip, strenuous, busy, and capable of having snow or ice in October. Day hikers also need a free self-issued wilderness permit, and parking requires the appropriate forest pass.
For this short weekend, Colchuck would consume most of Saturday and divide the group before the main events. We should save it for a dedicated hiking day. If a small, experienced subgroup insists, they need a dawn start, current trail and road conditions, traction and winter layers when appropriate, and a firm turnaround time.
Food Plan
Mozart’s
Mozart’s is the best choice for one polished Austrian dinner. With twelve people during Oktoberfest, it is not a walk-in plan: parties over eight are encouraged to contact the restaurant directly and may be seated at multiple tables. Because Friday and Saturday are already full, I would either reserve it as the Saturday alternative to cooking or save it for a smaller Leavenworth visit.
München Haus and Rhein Haus
München Haus is family-friendly, casual, and first come, first served. Rhein Haus also welcomes all ages and does not take regular reservations. Both work better as flexible sausage-and-pretzel stops than as a guaranteed twelve-person dinner during Oktoberfest. We should be comfortable splitting across two tables.
Sunday bakery stop
Argonaut Coffee and Biscuits is a “fancy bakery.” It is currently open Friday through Sunday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., with breads, pastries, sandwiches, coffee, and pantry items. Inventory is first come, first served. If we leave the Airbnb at 10 a.m., we should order before packing or accept whatever remains.
The Practical Checklist
Before the trip:
- Confirm whether everyone has a weekend pass or only one day of Oktoberfest admission.
- Reserve only one Saturday ticketed activity per person: Reindeer Farm or the coaster for the family group, and horseback riding for a small interested subgroup.
- Contact Mozart’s now if we want a twelve-person meal there.
- Bring pickleball paddles, card games, swimsuits, rain shells, warm layers, and clear bags for Oktoberfest security.
- Bring specialty cooking ingredients from home and use Safeway for fresh basics.
- Recheck the forecast, air quality, WSDOT pass report, Icicle Road, and trail conditions during trip week.
The best version of this weekend is Friday Oktoberfest, one good Saturday morning choice, a joyful dinner at the house, and enough space for games and conversation. Everything else is a bonus.
